Rare Earths and other strategic resources. The challenge of control at the heart of global competition

Recent disruptions in global supply chains, including the Ukrainian conflict, have put the subject of raw materials under the microscope.  Rare minerals and natural resources such as fossil fuels are among the strategic elements at the top of the agendas of all states. From those fundamental to everyday life and production to those indispensable to high-tech industries, these resources had already acquired a fundamental geopolitical role, well before the pandemic. The recent upheavals have only intensified the competition between superpowers intent on winning the most important share.  With China already largely ahead of this challenge, the US and Europe are looking for long-term solutions to overcome the uncertainty of recurring crises and stay in the game.

What is the state of competition for critical materials - Critical Raw Materials? How does it fit into the wider picture of power relations between powers? What role can Europe play in this race?

In this webinar organized in collaboration with Egea, participants will be able to listen and discuss with Sophia Kalantzakos, author of Rare Earth. China and the geopolitics of strategic minerals and professor of Environmental Studies, which will outline the international framework of rare resources, the role they are playing in the geopolitical reorganizations and the desirable policies for a more sustainable future.
