Space ambitions: the new space economy between great powers and private sector

Sede Da Definire NAPOLI

We are in the middle of a new space race in which, in addition to the challenge between the great powers, even the private giants are increasingly carving out a role  as protagonists. The space economy returns to be one of the main frontiers of scientific, economic and military competition.

Among the new public actors, China must take a giant step to break the traditional duopoly of the United States - Russia. Meanwhile, Europe must try to fill its historic gap by boosting investment.

Among private individuals, the commitment of SpaceX by Elon Musk and Blue Origin by Jeff Bezos is growing, and one wonders what role they will play in the coming years.

Will China overtake the US in the space race? Can Europe and Italy catch up? What weight will private individuals have in the new structure of the space economy?

Participants will have the opportunity to discuss these questions with Marcello Spagnulo, former senior advisor of the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and author of Geopolitics of space exploration. The challenge of Icarus in the third millennium

During the meeting the following topics will be discussed in depth:

  • the space competition between China and the United States (and Russia)
  • the role of the European Space Agency (ESA) and the opportunities for Italy
  • the centrality of individuals in the conquest of space.
