Trump, anger and populism: the reasons behind the tycoon's strength and the prospects if (not) he is reelected

In recent years, the West has witnessed several popular movements fueled by growing anger: from Occupy Wall Street to No Tav, from Vaffaday to Gilet Jaunes. Phenomena that have also led to radical and unexpected consequences such as the Brexit or the election of Donald Trump.

How can we explain the phenomenon of populism in general and Trumpism in particular? How is it that, despite the court cases and Capitol Hill, America seems ready to re-elect Trump? What consequences might Trump's possible (non) re-election have for Europe?

Carlo Invernizzi, a scholar of populism and an expert of American politics, will try to explain the “Trump case” by connecting it to other protest phenomena that have agitated the United States but also all of Europe. The author of “Twenty years of rage: from no-globals to Trumpism” (2024) will follow the red thread of rage, investigating the causes of Donald Trump's rise, and trying to predict developments in case of both victory and defeat. In particular, the following topics will be discussed:

  • politics and feelings: the link between anger and voting
  • the reasons for Trumpism. An in-depth look at the United States of Donald Trump
  • the consequences of anti-politics and the impacts of a possible Trump re-election.
