Since 1980, the Economic Development Board of Singapore, with the mission to make the city-state an international reference point for innovation and high-tech manufacturing, decided to focus on a development strategy focused on knowledge economy and human capital intensive sectors. Singapore is now the fourth largest high-tech exporting country in the world, the number of researchers has more than doubled in the last 15 years and its port is now the second largest in the world in terms of volume of commercial traffic.
