The international system has entered a phase of "new disorder", with weakened multilateral institutions, competition between major powers and regional crises that are difficult to contain.
In this scenario, the economy and security are no longer separate spheres: commercial, technological and financial competition merges with military doctrine, giving rise to what Federico Rampini, a columnist for Corriere della Sera, calls geo-economics. Tariffs, sanctions, industrial interventionism and state aid are the new tools of conflict between powers.
For Europe and for Italy, the new disorder imposes difficult choices: defending security and competitiveness whilst redefining their role between Washington, Beijing and Moscow.
In this context, the defence industry returns to the centre of the economic and strategic debate: investing in defence is no longer merely a military choice, but a prerequisite for the economic health and sovereignty of nation-states.
During this session, Federico Rampini will guide participants through an analysis of the main drivers of this turmoil and their implications for security, the economy and policy decisions.
