In this session, participants will have the opportunity to explore how the traditional divide between blue-collar and white-collar workers is evolving and what this means for people development, mobility and retention strategies. Drawing on Work’s New Divide, the new research by Top Employers Institute conducted among workers across 15 countries and 10 industries, the discussion will highlight how the real differentiating factor today is no longer the type of work people do, but their access to opportunities for growth and career mobility.

This new dividing line cuts across both worlds: on one side are those who are able to move, acquire new skills and build new career paths; on the other are those who risk getting stuck. This shift requires organisations to ask who truly has access to growth opportunities today and how they can create career paths that enable people to evolve without having to look elsewhere.

In particular, the discussion will explore:

  • how the boundaries of work are changing: what the gradual erosion of the distinction between blue-collar and white-collar workers means for people management
  • how to build pathways for growth and mobility: which levers organisations can use to foster reskilling, transitions between roles and the development of new skills
  • how to help people grow without losing them: how to rethink development, line management and sustainable work practices to create genuine opportunities for growth within the organisation.
